In our recent interview with Dungeon Defenders creator Trendy Entertainment we learn the studio almost went down the MOBA route, but instead choose to ‘reboot’ with Dungeon Defenders 2.
They had a ”bunch of classes” ready but ”threw that away” and instead wanted a ”real spiritual sequel” to the original game - ”quality over quantity.” They’re keeping four classes.
”A long time ago we were going to be making a MOBA instead of DD2, and there were a bunch of classes in that, but then we kind of threw that away and rebooted, decided to work on a real spiritual sequel to the first game,” said designer Phillip Asher. ”We wanted to focus on quality over quantity.”
Trendy will be sticking with their ‘classic four’ classes, of which we can take three into any one match. What we can do is outfit them using the Forge menu to better suit our play styles.
”So what we have is the Forge, which is a station where you can set up your characters and equip them with items. In DD2 you can bring three characters into a battle, you can have as many as you want, but you can only take three into a match and they will be the ones you want to play.”
In the first game characters levelled by stats alone, but now items through the Forge have somewhat become the stats. Specs also act as talents unlocking as we level up.
”These pretty drastically change how your character plays, so you could theoretically bring three totally different Hunters to the same game,” explained Asher. ”If I choose to level up ‘Drench’ for my hunter, that adds a debuff to all enemy attacks. Or I could focus on doing more damage with my bow, or all kinds of other stuff.”
