As we all know, evil dungeon overlords have all the fun, and Rasmus Ljunggren is hoping to capture the simple charms of subterranean empire-building with Dwelvers, now available on Steam Early Access.
The inspiration here is obviously Dungeon Keeper, as you send your band of destructive minions off to explore caverns, build up your fortress of doom and swarm forth to destroy the puny world of men. All that fun stuff.
Obligatory early access warning: this is an early Alpha build of the game and will inevitably feature bugs and crashes. Still, even now you can get a sense of the charmingly cartoonish world Ljunggren is building. Your main task as overlord supreme, apart from building devious traps to ensnare your enemies, is keeping your lowly minions fed and happy. And by happy I of course mean blind drunk.
“The most challenging part for the player will be creating an advanced production system,” explains Ljunggren, ”so as to have enough food to keep the creatures well fed, enough weapons and armour to outfit their army as a force to be reckoned with, and of course enough beer to keep them satisfied with you as their master. A drunk minion is a happy minion!”
Eventually you’ll be able to send your slavering hordes topside to conquer the puny surface kingdoms, but that’s not in the current build just yet. For more on Dwelvers, check out the game’s official website.
