NeocoreGames, best known for hack and slash series The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing, is bringing gory tower defence/action RPG hybrid Deathtrap to Steam Early Access this October.
You know the score: there are gribbly monsters trying to get from one side of your dungeon to the other. You must discourage them. Violently, with a selections of gruesomely efficient traps and spells.
As well as towers and the defence thereof, Deathtrap’s got three distinct classes to play - the Mercenary, Sorceress, and Marksman - each with their own special abilities and tactics. Each has their own skill tree with 50 skills per class, so you should be able to find the dungeon overlord who’s right for you. There’s also item crafting and a loot system, which adds another dash of RPG progression to proceedings.
Are you a closet sadist? Good news! Neocore describes Deathtrap as ”the goriest Tower Defense game ever”, and the game packs 25 different traps that provide an exhaustive list of ways to murderise your opponent, from freezing to burning to good old-fashioned decapitation.
In addition to a singleplayer campaign, you can hop online to play your friends. One player (presumably the one who won the coin-toss) plays the trapmaster, while the other tries to get past his defences, occasionally jumping in to directly control his minions.
Tower defence games are ten a penny these days, but Deathtrap looks like it’s got a few neat ideas. And you know what? If I’m placing a giant meat tenderiser trap down in my dungeon, I want to see some blood and guts when it gets triggered by some unfortunate minion of darkness - Deathtrap looks like it’ll cater nicely to my bloodlust. It hits Steam Early Access on October 22.
