Anti-war war game (that does actually make sense) This War of Mine has just received a major update, adding a new shelter for your band of desperate civilians to hide in, and the chance to choose your starting group of characters.
Those are the major additions in update 2.1, but as you’d expect there’s also a bunch of fixes and balance tweaks, including improvements to animations and NPC behaviour.
The new shelter is located on the outskirts of the city, and looks a bit different from the one you’re used to. It’s still a blasted, bombed-out mess, of course, but it has a tree-house. An instant improvement. That should really make those hours of crouching terrified in the rubble of a destroyed city while two opposing armies hurl artillery at each other just fly by. Every time you start a new game you’ll have a chance to find yourself in this new location.
Choosing your companions at the start of the game should allow you to tweak the game’s difficulty a little, by choosing certain characters with specific skills or weaknesses. Do note, however, that you have to complete the game at least once to unlock this option.
Frankly we thought This War of Mine was pretty great already, but it’s nice to see developer 11 Bit Studios adding to and improving their game. The option to start with your choice of characters was one requested by the community, and the studio is encouraging fans to leave feedback as to what they’d like to see addressed in the future.
