Spacebase DF-9, the space station management sim, moved out of Steam Early Access and into full release today, minus several features that were initially promised.
Perhaps in response to fan criticisms over the cut content, developer Double Fine is giving a free copy of action adventure Hack ‘n’ Slash out to current owners of the game.
“As a bonus for the customers who have supported us thus far,” Double Fine writes in a blog post accompanying the release, “anyone who already owns the game gets a free copy of Hack ‘n’ Slash and anyone who owns Hack ‘n’ Slash gets a free copy of Spacebase.
They don’t actually say “we’re sorry this doesn’t have all the things we said it would”, but that’s sort of implied. Double Fine announced cheerfully an October release date for Spacebase DF-9 last month, to the dismay of fans who had expected more content to be added during early access.
Founder Tim Chafer then weighed in to explain the situation, claiming that Spacebase DF-9 wasn’t generating the interest and sales required to continue its early access development.
As for what version 1.0 adds, you can check out the patch notes here. Standouts include a new tutorial mode, an achievements and goals tracker and a ‘pirate megafleet’ that arrives late-game to test out your defences. Starbase DF-9 is currently on offer at 40% off on Steam.
