Grinding Gear Games has announced that The Awakening, the biggest expansion yet for its free-to-play hack and slasher Path of Exile, will be released on Friday, July 10, after a relatively brief Beta testing period.
The expansion adds an Act Four storyline, wrapping up the game’s main plot, as well as ”new areas, monsters, six boss fights, five previously unannounced skills, 13 end-game maps, two challenge leagues and a climactic multi-stage encounter with Path of Exile’s new end boss!” Crikey, that should keep you occupied for a while.
The big deal here is that you can now leave Highgate, the central area where the main game takes place. This presumably means that Grinding Gear is ready to start exploring new areas of Wraeclast, its dark fantasy world. Out in the wilderness you’ll find several ‘Legendary’ bosses, extra challenging foes that are tied in to the game’s lore. Find, kill, loot, repeat. You know how this works.
There’s also some new skills to try out, including the ability to summon Elementals to fight at your side, support gems to further customise your skills, and bucketloads of new loot, including new Maraketh Weapons. In less exciting, but probably just as welcome news, the UI has been tightened up with several community-suggested changes.
Check out a new trailer above, and look forward to all these new goodies next week.
