XCOM/UFO is definitely one of those franchises with a rabid and devoted fan-base dedicated to both the old school and interested in the development of the current crop of XCOM games coming out. After learning coding in Microsoft Excel for a job, one such fan decided to put his knowledge to work and coded a working XCOM game in the spreadsheet software.
Reddit user “crruzi” posted his creation in a thread on the site a couple days ago and has garnered attention from the community for the dedication and ingenuity of the project. It’s not quite the stupendous graphical spectacle that Firaxis Games is putting in their XCOM titles nowadays, but it still holds true to the classic XCOM formula of execution, which you can see in images crruzi posted up on Imgur
It’s impressive to say the least. crruzi, himself states that he just recently learned coding to work his current job. To see something of this complexity built in such a short time after just having learned the system is truly ingenious. “The game,” according to crruzi, “is set between the events of XCOM: Enemy Within and XCOM 2, where a group of guerilla fighters try to liberate their city from ADVENT control. Only the tactical game is finished so far, but I am happy to say that what is there works quite well.”
Here’s hoping this becomes a hobby that crruzi continues to pursue.
