Dontnod Entertainment had some serious success with their episodic, time-traveling adventure series Life is Strange, but even before that series hit its stride, they had announced plans for another game: a vampire-centered RPG called Vampyr. With Life is Strange finished for now, Dontnod is ready to turn its attention back to Vampyr and came forth with details on the game today.
Philippe Moreau, Game Director on Vampyr went on the Playstation Blog to reveal a multitude of information about the inspiration, gameplay, and world of the game. Much like Life is Strange, Vampyr’s gameplay will hinge upon environmental and social interaction in the game to gain clues that will help you move forward. However, as might be expected, there is also a visceral combat mechanic to the game. The player will make use of make-shift weaponry, as well as their vampiric powers.
The game takes place in 1918 London during an outbreak of the Spanish Flu and closely following the end of World War I. The environment is gothic, stark, and smoggy. Science is on the rise, but superstition survives in the alleyways. Panic, desperation, and despair are everywhere. In the midst of this, players take on the role of Jonathan Reid, a doctor that served in the war. Jonathan has become a vampire and seeks to find a way to come to terms with it, but it comes to be much more than handling a disease.
As with Life is Strange, choices of gameplay have consequences. Vampires must feed and Jonathan will need to in order to survive, but taking the life of one character or another in order to satiate urges will affect the outcome of events in the game. Who do you save? Who do you kill? Who is truly innocent or evil? These are questions players will contend with in Vampyr.
Vampyr has no release date at this time. The game is slated currently slated for sometime in 2017 for PS4, but with Life is Strange on PC, a PC release for Vampyr can probably be expected.
