Blizzard has handed the assets from classic RTS Warcraft 3 over to the Starcraft 2 Arcade modding community, giving them access to “over three thousand new materials” including models, sounds and other doodads.
With access to all that data, surely a modern, fan-built version of Warcraft 3 on the new and improved Starcraft engine isn’t too far away?
The Arcade is essentially a portal where fans can share their custom creations. There’s a bunch of stuff on there already, including new game modes, skins, and even… cooking challenges. Yep.
“We are so excited to see what our community is going to make that we wanted to give you a head start,” writes Blizzard. “Once these assets become available to the public, we are going to spotlight the best content in what we are calling, “Memories of War.” The PTR is your chance to start playing with your new tools and to start making amazing experiences.”
For ‘Memories of War’ Blizzard are asking fans to recreate classic Warcraft moments in the Starcraft 2 editor. Which is all very interesting, but it’s the thought of a full Warcraft 3 remake with high-res textures and other modern graphical jiggery-pokery that’s really exciting.
