Titan Souls is a very promising-looking little indie game, an atmospheric trudge through a pixelised fantasy landscape packed with colossal monsters to battle.
To tease us before the game’s full release on April 14, developer Acid Nerve has given players the opportunity to sample a free demo - a scene-for-scene remake of the original Ludum Dare game jam prototype that inspired it.
“Titan Souls wouldn’t have existed if it wasn’t for the original Ludum Dare game jam, which saw your hero take down three titans with a single arrow, and gave birth to the core concept behind the entire game,” said David Fenn, Titan Souls’ composer. “Now that the development is complete, we thought it’d be fun to celebrate our journey by remaking this original sample of Titan Souls, replacing the bosses with their full-game counterparts that each of these initial ideas evolved into, and enhancing it with the new engine, graphics and audio.“
That’s admittedly a pretty cool way to do a demo. You can check out the original prototype here. The basic core of the game was already in place at this point – tough, unforgiving boss battles, a single arrow attack and the ability to summon said arrow straight back to you, and a focus on anticipation and agile dodges.
The game already looked pretty good back then, but as you can see from the trailer above Acid Nerve has done some stellar work adding detail to the game’s ruined, vaguely tragic world.
