In terms of virtual reality gaming and applications, Electronic Arts has always been a little bit quiet on the matter. That may be changing soon as new job openings suggest a team is being put together to handle VR-specific development.
The job openings are appearing on the Frostbite website which is the game engine that many of EA’s current heavy hitters use. Positions featured include creative director, technical artists, and rendering, gameplay, and software engineers.
The applications for VR in EA games are rather exciting. Star Wars: Battlefront easily comes to mind, as does the upcoming Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst early next year. VR tech has been on the upturn with a lot of different technology and software plans in the works from big name companies like Google and Sony, but there’s still that element of developing interesting content people will want to engage with in the market. EA throwing their hat into the ring might very well offer interesting and, more importantly, sellable applications that will get more people on-board.
At least, the idea of flying an A-Wing in VR or running along the building tops of Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst sounds pretty fantastic.
