Anyone who has followed the games, antics, and ethics of Ken Levine and his studio, Irrational Games, should know full well that the man and the studio value a deep creativity and a tight knit story. However, new job openings at Irrational point to a possibility of embracing a new kind of project that don’t generally follow the strict confines of Bioshock and System Shock.
The postings on Irrational Games’ website career page host just a couple positions. They’re looking for a Systems Designer and Tuner and a Quality Assurance Manager, but the descriptions inside the job pages contain some interesting information. Specifically, the Designer position requires experience in open world or semi-open world games such as Borderlands and Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor.
Levine and his studio have always maintained a strict narrative in their games. You see what they want you to see. Bioshock in particular hinges upon the player experiencing certain images, instances, and stimuli in order to draw the player into some of the most interesting reveals that have ever taken place in video gaming. The idea of Levine and Irrational Games taking on an open world or even semi-open world is an odd one, considering these games tend to leave the narrative stream more loose and at the player’s discretion.
The project for these games is yet unannounced, but back in January Levine expressed a desire to tackle a more sci-fi chapter segmented experience
