Dirk the Daring lives again, as the second attempt to crowdfund the Dragon’s Lair movie has been successful. After unsuccessfully attempting a Kickstarter campaign, Don Bluth and Gary Goldman achieved their more modest $250K Indiegogo crowdfunding drive - and have 32 days more of funding to go.
However, it must be noted that Bluth and Goldman are not looking for funding for an actual film. Rather, the duo are looking to produce a “pitch presentation”, about four minutes in length, to present to studios and potential backers. The presentation itself will include one full minute of classical animation in full color.
The proposed film will expand on the story of the famed 1983 laserdic game, as well as giving it backstory. The movie will take place in the kingdom of Winterholler, where Dirk is a prince - in the arcade game and short-lived animated series, he was just a valiant knight - who was betrothed to Princess Daphne. The court wizard of Dirk’s royal family, Mordroc, created a dragon which killed Dirk’s family. (Mordroc was the villain of Dragon’s Lair II.) Eventually, Dirk must battle an even larger dragon to save Daphne and defeat Mordroc.
