About a month ago, Scribblenauts developer 5th Cell announced a crowdfunding campaign on Fig for a new free-to-play card-based action RPG they called Anchors in the Drift. 5th Cell asked for $500,000 to fund the game, but has only raised a little over $100,000 with 4 days left to go.
Fig is a crowdfunding platform separate from other popular ones such as Kickstarter. It was formed from executives that have previously worked at Double Fine (Broken Age, Brütal Legend) and Harmonix (Rock Band). Still relatively new, Anchors in the Drift was only Fig’s second hosted video game crowdfunded project, the first of which was an open-world exploration indie game, Outer Wilds which succeeded over its $125,000 goal.
Anchors in the Drift has been in development for some time already. It features a story in which multiple time periods have come under attack by an interdimensional evil, bringing heroes from those different periods together. The player collects cards from gameplay which can be combined in different orders to create multi-stage abilities for their playable characters. The game can be played in single player or with friends.
It’s difficult to say where the fault lies, whether this is simply a matter of Fig not being that well known yet or Anchors in the Drift simply being lost in the shuffle among other titles. Either way, it’s not looking good for the project.
