Slitherine has announced a new 4X space strategy game called Last Days of Old Earth, which puts players in the role of factions warring over the dwindled resources of a depleted Earth. The developer considers Last Days of Old Earth a spiritual successor to 2007’s Armageddon Empires, itself a post-apocalyptic 4X game.
Players can be in charge of one of two major factions: the human Skywatchers or the robotic Automata. Naturally, each faction has its own play style, featuring 30 unique units, including such units as the tough Northwalk Veteran infantry, ancient Bearcat Landship tanks, the city-sized VN Walker mecha and so on. There are also 24 unique hero units and 60 different modifications that can be made to both regular and hero units.
The game will also stress tactical thinking as well, as players can take advantage of terrain. Players on the high ground will gain a larger line of sight, while othe terrain like forests can hide your units. Combat is chess-like, turn-based and on a grid.
Slitherine states that the game will be going into Steam Early Access in February 2016, and has four stages planned out in advance. Each stage will add gameplay mechanics; for example, the first one will add Stealth, which adds sabotage and assassination, while Sentinel units can be used to counter hidden units.
The developer also released the system requirements for the game:
