Back in 1995, a British developer by the name of Team17 put out a neat little game where players took control of a team of worms that took turns lobbing military hardware at each other in an effort to blow the other work up first. It’s hard to believe so much time has passed since the original Worms turn based artillery strategy game found it’s way into our hearts, but the series celebrates its 20th anniversary today.
The announcement was made via Team17’s official Twitter page earlier today. To date, there have been over 20 different Worms games and perhaps over 30 if you include social media adaptations and spin-offs. Each entry has had its own little unique touch, but the core has always remained faithful: Take turns trying to blow your friends to kingdom come.
The comical feel of landing that fateful grenade just right or getting the air strike to light your unfortunate foes up was always a draw for many fans, myself and my friends included. The game has always balanced simplicity of controls with the complexity of deeper stats like trajectory, force, and wind speed, ensuring that while a bunch of drunk friends could surely have a blast with the game, the real danger was that guy who knew how to boomerang a rocket right into your seemingly impenetrable little hidey-hole.
You can find many of the core entries available on numerous outlets, including Steam and GOG.com. Congrats to the fine folks at Team17. Worms is surely still a fan-favorite in tons of circles.
