Lords of the Fallen developer Dark13 unveiled their new dark science fiction action-RPG The Surge back at Gamescom this year, but since then, precious little information has been written about it til now. The developer has released new concept art for the game, as well as some bits of new info.
In an interview on PlayStation Blog with creative director Justin Klose, he went on to explain the dystopian setting of the game, which is a logical extension of today’s real-world issues leading to a climate nightmare caused by mega-corporations. Klose remarked, ”Take a look at recent trends in technology, robotics, AI, renewable energies… but also the political, environmental and economic development in the last 30 years. Where will all this end? If it were to end badly… welcome to The Surge.”
He also stated that the science fiction setting makes it easier to explain why a character gets character boosts. Since the player wears an Exo Suit, adding something like strength is merely a function of the player having modded his suit, rather than some magical unexplained increase.
”The difference to Lords of the Fallen is that we take more time introducing the different features for the player at the beginning of the game,” Klose explained. ”Not in a lengthy tutorial, but as you are advance in the game, the features that will help you overcome your enemies will come one by one so that you can grasp the whole toolset of possibilities and not miss on some of them just because they were introduced poorly.”
Deck13 even started a fake Twitter account for Jonah Guttenberg, who is an executive with an in-game corporation named CREO, who made this tweet then later released a fake press release.
The statistics on climate change are in; the documents from CREO are out. Can’t wait to see the reaction!
