I think it’s fair to say that the general response to Ninja Gaiden creator Tomonobu Itagaki’s latest project, the third-person action game Devil’s Third, has been somewhat lukewarm.
Which is why it’s a little odd to hear that Itagaki’s Valhalla Game Studios is bringing a free-to-play multiplayer version called Devil’s Third Online to the PC this September. Singleplayer story mode (which actually sounds like the most amusing part of the game) will remain exclusive to the Wii U version.
The multiplayer, meanwhile, is described as blending ”clan-based action, resource management and strategy”, but judging from the footage above it will largely consist of burly men whacking each other with a variety of melee weaponry.
”In consideration of cultural characteristics in each region, the content is being optimized via co-development with local publishers. Service territories and the details of game content will be announced accordingly,” says Valhalla.
Itagaki himself has responded to recent criticism of Devil’s Third by blaming the negative previews on a lack of player skill, describing the game as a title ”which reflects the player’s skill directly/vividly.”
