Daybreak Game Company has come up with an innovative punishment for troublesome players in its venerable MMORPG Everquest 2 – they’ll go straight to prison.
Or, more accurately, a prison server called Drunder. Anyone who is found to be repeatedly breaking the rules, or otherwise being disruptive to other players’ fun, will be teleported there without trial.
Drunder isn’t actually a physical representation of a prison (though that would be awesome); instead it’s a regular server that will receive absolutely no customer support – you can do what you want there, but you’ll never be able to leave and you’ll be stuck with other troublemakers for good.
“Rather than disrupt live servers in an attempt to join the “prison server,” players can use our /petition system and ask to join Drunder,” says Daybreak. “To be clear: You won’t be able to move individual characters to this server, while maintaining characters from the same account on another server. This is a ONE-WAY trip for an entire account forever.”
It’s certainly an interesting solution to poor behaviour among your player base. Apparently the Daybreak community Game Masters have been asking for this for years, so the studio’s decided to give it a god and see what happens.
“As I said, this is an experiment,” says Windstalker (probably not their real name, but I hope it is), a member of the development team, on the game’s forums. “We wanted to see what happens given it’s not a very common option. Let’s see where this takes us…”
