Indie developer Skyshine has confirmed a September release date for Bedlam, its sci-fi turn-based strategy game built on the same engine as the critically lauded Banner Saga.
Set in a post-apocalyptic world clearly inspired by Mad Max, the game casts you as the Mechanic, a mysterious figure attempting to transport a Dozer full of passengers across the wasteland to a distant utopia known as Aztec city.
On the way you’ll encounter raiders, acid-spewing plants and various other mutant freaks. The game features a roguelike structure, so you only get one life - think of it as a desert-based FTL, packed with random encounters and lots of ways to get yourself killed. There are several regions in the game, each controlled by a different faction, and none of them are particularly welcoming to travelers. Surprising, huh?
“The world of Skyshine’s BEDLAM was really born out of the best possible places, the stuff we loved when we were kids. The games, graphic novels and movies we experienced in the 80’s like Mad Max, Heavy Metal and Judge Dredd were all inspirations.” says Skyshine’s art director John Mueller, who’s clearly done a fantastic job. “We loved games like FTL and XCOM and the rogue-like genre was a perfect fit for what we wanted to accomplish. “We have made a game our 14 year old selves would have loved, complete with vomiting monsters, killer robots and gruesomely funny deaths!”
My interest is certainly piqued. Look for Bedlam this September 17, when it’s officially released via various digital retailers.
