Valve and HTC’s Vive VR headset will only be available in limited supply this year, before it launches in full in 2016. Valve had originally claimed that we would see the device hit store shelves in 2015, and while that’s technically still the case, it’s not the full launch we were expecting.
”Later this year HTC will offer the first commercial Vive units via a limited quantity of community and developer systems, with larger quantities shipping in calendar Q1 2016,” wrote the company, in a press release sent out to advertise the headset’s presence at PAX Prime this weekend.
With Oculus RIft also shipping in 2016, that makes next year an interesting time for VR technology. Will it make the breakthrough that industry experts believe it’s capable of? The Vive is positioned at the higher end of the VR market, with headsets expected to sell for more than the $350 Oculus.
