Game designer Davey Wreden, who developed the offbeat The Stanley Parable, is teasing his new game, The Beginner’s Guide, with a mostly empty website.
The Beginner’s Guide is described as on the site as ”A narrative video game for Mac and PC, launching this Thursday October 1, 2015.” An unlisted trailer* puts the player in the role of someone sitting down in front of a stranger’s computer and exploring it (without their permission). Visiting files will open up various minigames and 3D pastiches that puts the player in the position of having to figure out what the state of mind that stranger is in.
“Alternative” is the best word to describe The Stanley Parable, which was a reflexive navel-gazing deconstruction of videogames, which put the player in the role of Stanley, an officer worker in an Orwellian company. His travails were narrated by an almost-bored voice actor. The game would branch off into different endings depending on the player’s choices; one even got the narrator involved with the story.
Gamers can check out the sparse official site here.
