Survival! It’s all the rage these days. So is space! The Solus Project aims to see if those two great tastes taste great together.
The Solus Project is a sci-fi story-driven survival game, which tickles a lot of my fancies. Instead of a sandbox, the game is a linear adventure with a set progression of levels. You’ll contend with alien weather conditions as you explore a mysterious planet and seek out the resources you need to survive. The open-ended nature of most survival games has meant they’re not really for me, and I’m interested to see how this game implements those mechanics in a more story-driven capacity.
The game will release on Steam Early Access and GOG Games in Development 18th February. The developers say the game is done, but want to use the Early Access period for testing, feedback, bug fixes, and say that they expect the game to be final about 90 days from initial release. The initial launch will include the game’s first three levels, with the remainder to be added throughout Early Access until the final launch.
While I’m interested in the premise, the weird Early Access rollout has me skeptical of the game’s final state. The developers promise the game is content complete, but putting it out early and asking for feedback speaks of a lack of confidence to me. Or maybe I’m just being overly cautious! In any case, we’ll find out how it stands very soon.
