Fans of first person parkour will be getting their game on as Mirror’s Edge Catalyst will be arriving in over two months from now, and Electronic Arts has unleashed two videos showing off two key aspects of the title: movement and combat.
Movement is the biggest part of Mirror’s Edge, of course. The whole point of being a runner is getting from Point A to Point B with the package as soon as possible, and that means navigating the concrete jungle smoothly. One of the main things to note from the video is that occasionally the action will cut to a third-person shot when, say, Faith spins around a corner. This is probably introduced to try to prevent some of the nausea players have had when playing Mirror’s Edge.
For those of you wondering about those orbs, they’re not collectibles. Rather, they’re a part of Faith’s vision. Last June, senior producer Sara Jansson posted on Reddit, ”We are introducing a new version of Runner’s vision that will help you navigate the city.”
Then there’s combat. While Faith tries to avoid it, it’s inevitable that she’ll have to deal with unfriendly armed security. As with the first game, Faith’s strength isn’t combat, so her movements have to be lightning quick and perhaps deadly, whether it’s quickly disarming a guard, getting around them, or merely kicking them to their doom. Lethal or non-lethal is up to the player. Either way, deadly threats have to be deal with quickly if the player wants to post a record time on their mission run.
Again, there are third-person breaks in the action when Faith is performing some particularly awesome moves, such as running up a wall to perform a flying kick on a baddie.
Mirror’s Edge Catalyst will be vaulting onto PC and consoles this coming May 24th in North America, with the worldwide release arriving May 26th.
