Quantum Break is Microsoft’s next high-profile game arriving on April 5th for PC and Xbox One. A new interview with creative director Sam Lake has revealed that the game started life as a pitch for Alan Wake 2.
According to Lake in the interview, ”Initially we went there with the pitch for Alan Wake 2. That did have a live-action show as part of the pitch. We had been doing small things, and tests with live-action, and I was interested in pushing it further. And they got really excited because they were talking about having that as a big thing. They even said to us, ‘Why not make it even bigger?’ And we were happy to take that! And say yes, let’s make it bigger!”
So what happened? Things changed behind the scenes, stated Lake. ”There’s a lot of behind closed door invisible work happening all the time. The important thing is that also concepts evolve. I feel that’s always an iterative process. More time is more iteration.” He then explained that staying with the Alan Wake concept was too limiting, and that they had to turn it into a new IP to allow it to expand.
As for a new Alan Wake game? ”It’s too early to say anything specific about that. We’ve had and we are having discussions about it. But there’s no definite news at the moment,” Lake teased.
Quantum Break itself has done its own share of teasing, as Alan Wake appears as an in-game television show “Alan Wake Returns”, which may or may not be an upcoming game.
