Russia-based indie developer 8 Points has announced a new multiplayer survival horror game for PC and Xbox One called The WIld Eight, in which players can either work together or look out for themselves in a hostile, strange Alaskan wilderness using an isometric action-RPG format.
The story seems to be heavily influenced by the TV show Lost, as the game begins with a plane inexplicably vanishing mid-air and ending up in a snowy wasteland somewhere in Alaska. If that weren’t enough, the eight survivors of the subsequent plane crash find themselves dealing with abandoned structures and mutated wolves.
(The dev team informed me in response not long after this article was posted: “We are big fans of LOST and sure it inspired us to make a game about the survivors at some point :)” - ed.)
The extreme cold itself is the biggest threat to the group. ”At night the temperature drops to critical points, and a bleeding wound worries you when least expected. You must develop all survival skills such as creation of shelters and other necessary things, otherwise you’re doomed to death.” However, things get even more complicated when a madman appears with a taste for human flesh.
The circumstances surrounding development of the game itself is no less strange, at least according to developer 8 Points. Based in Yakutsk, which is a mere 280 miles from the Arctic Circle, the studio claims they eat bears for breakfast, develop games for lunch and gather firewood for dinner - because electricity is too expensive.
Regardless, 8 Points says the game will be ready by this coming Fall 2016, and released a very moody teaser trailer for it.
