Werewolf, or Mafia if you’re more into the criminal organization theme, is a classic traitor game in which townspeople must deduce who among them is a hidden werewolf, lynching suspects before getting munched on at night by said creatures. Werewolves Within brings the game to the virtual space.
As with the source game, all players are given roles, whether on the side of the townspeople or the werewolves. Players may get a special role that allows them to perform an ability once per round, such as the Bodyguard designating one person uneatable by Werewolves that night. The twist is that the technology mimics the sort of “tells” that players might give during a live session.
”Using voice detection, Red Storm’s positional tracking technology and animations based on voice inflection analysis, players’ real-life actions and body language will be reflected through their VR character in-game,” explains Ubisoft. In other words, players will be able to see if someone is lying by their vocal performance possibly being reflected as nervous ticks on the virtual character.
“VR is proving to be an amazing platform for social interaction, moving toward truly feeling like you are there with other people,” stated senior creative director David Votypka.“Werewolves Within gives players a taste of how VR can generate strong social connections, allowing you to get together to have a great time with others no matter how near or far they are.”
For those of you who are anxious to play a Mafia/Werewolf style game online now, try Town of Salem. It has some issues, but it’s a fun little traitor game for those who need to get their Mafia on.
