Thea: The Awakening is a turn-based strategic survival game that was released back in November, 2015. Adam Barnes reviewed the game on launch, praising its blending of RPG and strategy with an excellent rating of 8/10. After a very long wait, developers MuHa Games have revealed the first details on a free piece of DLC called Return of the Giants.
The Return of the Giants DLC adds a storyline about ancient Giants, new enemies, buildings for the village, an event editor for creating your own quests, and full English voiceovers have been added.
MuHa Games are calling the DLC an expansion, which has been in developed for over five months with a lot of feedback taken from the community. It’ll be interesting to see what new missions and storylines the community creates with the event editor.
The development team behind Thea: The Awakening consists of only four people, which means the 50,000 copies sold up to date has already covered the cost of development.
“These sale figures exceed the initial goal five times over and for a very hardcore and niche debut 4X title, this seems like a considerable success.” said the developers in a press release sent to GameWatcher.
In fact, MuHa Games are pretty open about the development process for the game, telling us that the cost to license the Unity Engine, all assets and outsourcing of art and music for the basic version of the game and the cost of the Giants DLC totaled at about £15,000. Revenue from selling the Honey Hex Framework on the Unity Asset Store covered over half of the development costs, with the rest of the revenue coming from sales of the game in the United States (34.4%), Germany (9.3%), Russia (7.5%), United Kingdom (7.5%) and France (6%).
Thea: The Awakening is currently available to purchase from Games Republic for £14.99. The Return of the Giants DLC will be given to all purchases for free.
