One distinct feature of the rebooted Tomb Raider series has been its art direction and style. A big part of that credit goes to Brian Horton who has been a prominent player in the return of the series. Unfortunately, it would seem with Rise of the Tomb Raider completed, Horton wishes to move on to new pastures. His resignation from Crystal Dynamics was announced today.
The announcement was made via the Tomb Raider Tumblr. Horton stated that there was no ill-will. The reason behind the resignation is that he and his family are moving to Southern California, away from the Crystal Dynamics offices. It’s unknown at this time whether or not Horton will continue to pursue work in the gaming industry.
Horton has certainly been a huge piece of the puzzle since the 2013 release of Tomb Raider. He served as the reboot’s Senior Art Director. When it came to Rise of the Tomb Raider, Horton was promoted up to Game Director. It’s safe to say that Horton has been in integral roles when it came to giving Lara Croft and Tomb Raider its new personality.
Whatever Horton intends to do, we wish him the best of luck. Hopefully this isn’t the last time we’ve seen his hands and vision at work in the industry.
