In a cruel twist of fate, as soon as Smash + Grab went on sale for the weekend, the developer behind the multiplayer crime simulator reportedly closed its doors at the start of the week.
United Front Games, known for their work on Sleeping Dogs and its eventually cancelled multiplayer sequel, were the masterminds behind the well-received Early Access title Smash + Grab which, maybe not coincidentally, went on sale over the weekend.
The Kickstarter-backed project is now no longer available to buy through Steam with sources telling Gamespot the studio has closed for good.
The developers' first project was ModNation Racers, a PlayStation 3 exclusive focused on prominently by Sony during the early days of the console's life-span. They later went on to find success in Sleeping Dogs only to face difficulties when trying to develop the multiplayer focused spiritual successor - Triad Wars - which ceased development during its beta test at the start of the year.
How exactly the studio went from soft-launching a title to closing down in the space of 2 months is unknown at the minute. Perhaps the sales of Smash + Grab over the discounted weekend was their last-ditch attempt to stay afloat. Hopefully we'll have an update soon.
