First Wonder fell far short of its Kickstarter goals, but the developer Rogue Rocket Games stated, ”we’re committed to continuing to work on First Wonder, finding a way to build it up over time to hit our aspirations for what we wanted to accomplish.” They have finally given up the ghost, however, and terminated the project permanently.
Lead designer Nick Bruty emailed their slacker backers, saying, ”We had some interesting conversations but regardless of how excited some were for the project it came down to numbers and risk. For publishers, the kickstarter showed we just didn’t have or couldn’t find the audience.”
He went on to say, ”I remain undeterred but it’s clearly been too many years since Giants and MDK and If I want to build games like First Wonder then I have to start off much smaller, simpler and grow a new audience. I have such a game in mind.”
For those who donated after the Kickstarter failed, they were offered a $15 refund or a demo of First Wonder and a copy of Gunpowder (which is worth $15).
Giants: Citizen Kabuto is available on Good Old Games, for those of you who still want your Giants fix, or those of you who never got to play it back in the day.
