Bethesda has unleashed a new trailer showing off the various multiplayer modes gamers can expect when they face off in DOOM’s online mode. Some are old standbys, while others are fresh new ideas.
While the game features the usual Team Deathmatch, Domination and Clan Arena (which is basically Last Man Standing), it also features a wild new mode called Freeze Tag. Just like the kid’s playground game, players aren’t killed, but frozen instead. Turning into blocks of ice, they can only be melted by friendly teammates. The blocks can also be moved around the map, making for some weird emergent gameplay. ”For example, you can try to knock your teammate into the hazard so he’ll be destroyed; the shattered ally will then respawn. Or, you can try to prevent a foe from being thawed by knocking him away from an ally,” notes Bethesda. How do you win? By freezing the opponent’s entire team.
Warpath is a King of the Hill variant in which there is a single control point that moves around the map. There is also a Demon Rune that is on the opposite side of wherever the control point happens to be. Claiming the Rune turns the player into a hellspawn of some kind - and there are a few types. Players win when they’ve held the control point for a certain amount of time.
Soul Harvest is your basic dog tags mode in which kills are claimed by those picking up the soul that’s dropped. However, the twist here is that the first soul to be claimed will cause a Demon Rune to spawn, and the effects of the Rune has no time limit at all. Players drop two souls when a Demon kills it, and killing the Demon? It drops five.
DOOM is due to be released on May 13th, 2016 on PC and console.
