If you tuned into E3 this year, there’s a good chance you saw the impressive demo of We Happy Few at Microsoft’s press conference. It was the Bioshock-looking one with the drugs that made you see nasty things as being very nice. You might have assumed based on that cinematic demo that this was a story driven game. It’s not! It’s a survival game, and it’s out on Early Access right now.
The game is set in 60s-futuristic vision of England, in a dystopian world dominated by the omnipresent visage of TV personality Uncle Jack. The city of Wellington Wells has been ravaged by war, and its citizens keep themselves high on happy pills to avoid confronting the reality of their awful situation.

The game will force you to blend in with the local citizenry, as they’ll quickly turn on anyone they suspect of being downer. You’ll need to search out the town for supplies and weapons as you defend yourself and look for a way out. The Early Access version of the game has most of the basic survival gameplay elements ready to go, but you’ll have to wait for the final release to see the game’s story play out.
We Happy Few is available in Steam Early Access and the Xbox Game Preview Program right now. The developers expect to the release the final version in six to twelve months.
