Chris Roberts has announced in his blog that Squadron 42, the single player mode for Star Citizen, will become a standalone expansion that will be an optional part of Star Citizen. In other words, players can pick up Star Citizen without Squadron 42, and Squadron 42 can be played by itself for those gamers who don’t want to bother with multiplayer.
In the blog, Robets wrote, ”At the December livestream, we announced that Squadron 42 and Star Citizen will be split into two separate packages in the near future. To update on this: the split will occur on February 14th. Squadron 42 will be available as either a stand alone game or an optional addon for Star Citizen rather than be included by default. If you want to lock in both games for the lowest possible price, consider pledging before this deadline.”
This is not news, for even before the December live stream, Squadron 42 was treated almost as a separate game. They were never referred to as being Star Citizen per se; Two of the trailers were notable in showing off the vocal talents of Gary Oldman and Mark Hamill.
Star Citizen continues to be in a closed alpha for backers, and RSI maintains it will be launched before 2016 is over.
