War Thunder is game all about combat between planes, tanks, and ships. It’s set during World War II, which was a long time ago. But it’s about to go back even further in history with a new update.
British fighting ships from the early 1700s will be available in a special test session starting today, through the events tab in Arcade mode. Like the existing vessels, these historic warships feature a realistic damage model rather than hit points and the developers have taken pains to ensure that the armor modeling is accurate to the real vessels.
“It’s been a very interesting and challenging task to recreate historic battles of the most powerful sailing nations,” said Gaijin Entertainment CEO Anton Yudintsev. “We started working on it last year, adding interactive water, and then a few days ago we added interactive weather conditions, which are very important for realistic sailing conditions.”
The plan is eventually to introduce an open world that is built around PvE and run by the players, where they’ll fight against randomly-generated pirates. Players will be able to join together to create fleets, protecting their merchants and caravans.
The test session for these vessels starts today and lasts through the weekend.
