Even with the brunt of the massive legal battle behind them for now, John Carmack and Zenimax are still fighting a battle between them.
Shortly after the courts slammed a $500 million order atop Oculus, current CTO John Carmack - the biggest root of this whole situation - decided to weigh in on the verdict through general social media platforms.
His platform of choice? Facebook. Though we could comment on how it's obvious he'd Zuckerberg's platform with his employer being owned by the multi billion dollar firm, you wouldn't be seeing his long-form piece fit nicely on Twitter. Through it, he commented on how "Oculus never had access to the Id C++ VR code" and that a single code analysis brought in by Zenimax's legal team should have cleared him - but was likely indistinguishable to those involved in the ruling of the case.
But despite Carmack still calling foul-play at Zenimax for absorbing a large chuck of the cash Facebook used to purchase the Oculus VR group in the first place, Zenimax released a fresh statement to Gamasutra stating how "Oculus programmers themselves admitted using Zenimax’s copyrighted code" and that Carmack's decision to wipe 92% of his harddrive came soon after the planned litigation made its way to his ears.
Even after a $500 million settlement, the two sides are still fighting each other over the facts. While it's easy to side with Zenimax over the more simple truths, it's interesting to hear Carmack essentially say the whole situation is just too complicated for someone other than seasoned computer experts to understand.
