The latest backer update video for Obsidian's Fig crowdfunded Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire was just released, and it's got a number of interesting additions to the game. The update reveals firing squads, allowing any race to helm your pirate ship vessel, and of course having too much to drink and either passing out or projectile vomiting over the floor. But the most exciting addition is Animancy Cat, a magical cat who can follow you on your adventures who is based on director Josh Sawyer's own cat Sesame. That's him above.
Everything we have on Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire!
Divinity: Original Sin II will let you talk to and eat ghosts!
In the video, which is Backer Update 39, the game's producer Katrina Garsten explains how the Animancy Cat can join you in the Deadfire Archipelago, where the game is set. She has a brass cone and a tube coming out of her side, as she's been kept alive through unnatural sciences. Katrina says, "Animancy Cat, much like Sesame, survived a near-death experience and has returned with extraordinary powers." There's no word on what special magical powers either the in-game or real-life cat has, except for being adorable of course.
The rest of the update shows the ways in which they're making Pillars 2 more pirate-y, with various swashbuckling seafaring actions. All the different races can helm your pirate ship at the ship's wheel for example, meaning some races like the Orlans can't see over the wheel while others tower above it. There are 10 consumable bombs that can be thrown all with their own special look and effects, including explosive, frost, and immolation. NPCs now have various states of drunkenness, with the ability to play the piano, dance, pass out, or projectile vomit all over the floor. Something to look forward to certainly.
Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire is the sequel to RPG house Obsidian's crowdfunded spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate. The original game was funded on Kickstarter and released March 2015, whereas the sequel was funded on Fig in February this year, with the team aiming to have it ready in Q1 2018 although that can slip. The first game was an interesting but straight fantasy, but the sequel sees Obsidian following in the footsteps of the Risen series in making the second game based around pirates in the same fantasy universe. Which is awesome.
