Prone to motion sickness in VR? Detached may not be for you. But for those who have no trouble falling from space in the comfort of their own home, it could be VR experience you've been waiting for. It's heading out of Early Access on May 18.
Throwing yourself into space is nothing new at this point. Having been first popularised with the experimental version of Alien: Isolation, we've been scared half to death in VR many times before.
But that took place in the isolated husk of a vessel floating through space. Other than that, we've piloted fully-function ships around the vast reaches of the galaxy and spawned back in when we've been shot down. Detached, on the other hand, seems to want you to relive the best parts of Hollywood space flicks - like Gravity - by giving you full 360-degree movement while not being strapped to a chair like George Clooney.
Announced Over A Year Ago Now, It's Taken This Long For Detached To Solidify As A Product
With your ship having been hijacked, you're thrown out into the cosmos with only your suit keeping you alive. Float around a sandbox environment while keeping an eye out for abandoned supplies pivotal to your survival. With the suit being equipped with shields, boosters and rockets, you're not just floating around delaying the inevitable - you have a solid shot of living out your years if you play your cards right.
Though Detatched is designed as a VR-heavy exploration game, a patch later in the year will detach it from the chains of the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. When it does, things might start to get a little strange. Expect the VR experience on May 18.
