It was back in December 2016 when KOEI TECMO formally announced Dynasty Warriors 9 - the next evolution of their long-standing 'one versus thousands' brawler. We were told we wouldn't hear much for a while. It's now officially be a while, making today's info justified.
A new trailer released today aims to provide us with a 'first look' at the new game's picturesque historical battlefields and environments. But the only way to truly understand any area of Dynasty Warriors to see war breaking out on it.
Using the trailer as a canvas, we're introduced to the 'State Combo System' - on that allows players to perform three attack styles; Trigger, Flow and Finish strikes, with each causing more damage than the last. The aim is presumably put in place to allow for 'flow' on the battlefield - rather than frantic, relatively mindless button mashing.

Capitalising on the new open-world mechanics of this new-generation sequel, we'll be able to make use of terrain and elevation differences and nearby destructible props like oil barrels. By making use of the new Grappling Hook, it's possible to scale structures and mountains for additional combat and/or retreat plans.
Did they really have grappling hooks in third-century China? We don't see enough grappling hooks these days.
