With the PC release of Destiny 2 arriving tomorrow, console players are already complaining of a content drought. And while over 2 million users have straight-up stopped playing the game since launch, those that remain are still finding things buried around the planets.
The latest find comes from Reddit user Scrocchi who noticed a potential nod to one of the most influential video game franchises over the last two decades - Pokémon.
Cabal Pods are hidden (or not so hidden) all around the various planets of Destiny 2. It's how they invade. How they get around. But they evidently don't all look alike. Usually simple white spheres with door/latch in the centre, they follow all the simple characteristics of a Pokéball -- the instrument used to capture and release Pokémon.

The similarities, however, end at their shape. While the Cabal pods being pure white in colour, they miss out on the red upper half of a Pokéball. Someone at Bungie likely made the connection, causing the team (or a rogue artist) to jump at the opportunity. Head on over to the Distant Shore and you'll find a much more convincing one buried just enough to be a clear reference. Its white bottom, red top and prominent release button cannot be denied!
It even rules out it being a Voltorb. Said to often be mistaken for a stray Pokéball for their looks, the release latch is a clear tell. So what do we think? Coincidence or easter egg? Maybe there are other non-spherical references to the classic Nintendo franchise? Maybe we're just bored? Either way, I know where I'm going tomorrow.
