Creative Assembly's latest historical Total War entry will be out on the 19th of April, according to SEGA.
Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia, the first in a new spin-off series of focused historical titles, takes place in 878 AD, as English King Alfred the Great finally managed to defeat the Viking invasion of the British Isles. As the Norse warlords settle across Britain, the kings of England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales prepare to wage war in a country in peace for the first time in 80 years.
Creative Assembly Explains the Choice of Setting for Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia
Total War: Three Kingdoms, the next historical Total War game, will be set in China
Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia will be available as a digital download or as a Limited Edition boxed product available in some territories, which includes a ridiculously sexy embossed Steelbook inspired by ornately decorated Anglo Saxon helmets of the period. The Limited Edition also includes a double-sided poster featuring a detailed campaign map and a set of collectable art cards celebrating five of the most prominent in-game faction leaders. The game is already available for pre-order on Steam with a 10% discount, and the Limited Edition will be available soon at "participating local retailers".
In a very nice move, Creative Assembly will donate 25% of their pre-order profits to War Child UK. According to SEGA's statement: "Total War games revolve around war; its strategic and tactical challenges, the impact it has on national economies, and many other high-level abstractions. However, the brutal reality is that war has horrific consequences for the innocent, and children are often the most vulnerable. War Child UK, the charity for children affected by conflict is striving for a world with no child’s life torn apart by war. It aims to reach children as early as possible when conflict breaks out and stays to support them through their recovery - helping to keep them safe, give them an education, and equip them with skills for the future."
If you are unsure about the game, Thrones of Britannia is a standalone title in the veins of Total War: Shogun II - Fall of the Samurai and Total War: Attila. Focused on one specific event or character instead of a huge time period spanning a few centuries, Total War Saga is a new spin-off series that deeply explores a singular time of historical interest.
The developers promise the same kind of gameplay and length of other Total War titles, which lend themselves to hundreds of hours of warfare. The map of Thrones of Britannia is said to be the same size as Shogun II's, but infinitely more detailed -- according to Creative Assembly, it is "the most detailed Total War campaign map ever made".
