Aggressors: Ancient Rome is the first video game to be developed by Kubat Software, which will be released on PC via Steam "soon". The turn-based 4X strategy title has a focus on historical accuracy, and is quick to highlight accessibility and in-depth tutorials, likely advertising its bid to break the grand strategy curse of being opaque with a steep learning curve.
The naming scheme suggests publisher Slitherine is hoping for this game to do well enough to spawn Aggressors: [insert civilisation name here] sequels. Ancient Rome, the first to bear the Aggressors name, however, will be set in and around the Mediterranean sea, during the era when the Roman Empire rose and stabilized itself. The game boasts 20 playable factions including Rome, obviously, Carthage, Egypt and Greece, among others.
Though players will be able to diverge from history, such as succeeding in defeating Rome as Hannibal of Carthage, however painstaking in-depth historical research ensures that the world and AI of Aggressors: Ancient Rome will react to your actions in a realistic manner, extrapolated from various sources. A highly detailed diplomacy system will allow players to get tangled up in all manner of political webs.
The game's combat system is also described by the publisher, like the other features, as in-depth and complex. Players playing armchair general will need to consider morale, terrain and the various traits and abilities of your units when making tactical decisions. Sometimes the militaries of vast empires were brought low by roving tribes, so only foolish commanders would approach any encounter as a guaranteed victory.
Aggressors: Ancient Rome will be released on Steam shortly, with Beta sign-ups open now.
