Battle Fleet: Ground Assault is the first game in the turn-based strategy series natively developed for PC, as all previous titles were initially developed as mobile games, with just Battle Fleet 2 having been ported to Steam. Ground Assault also differs from previous installments, which were mainly naval (hence “Fleet”) in being focused rather on land battles fought mainly in tanks (hence “Ground Assault”).
Ground Assault will feature a main single-player campaign upon launch, and additional campaigns will be added later on. This first set of missions will focus on the Normandy invasion near the tail-end of the war, with the player controlling squads of tanks in various battles. The game has 20 distinct, historically accurate tanks rendered in full 3D with unique hit-areas and stats.
The gist of Ground Assault’s gameplay lies in the angle and power-reliant firing mechanic, popularized by Worms - which the developers themselves cite - and turn-based strategic combat, but is spiced up by minor RPG elements such as a leveling system for tank commanders, recon planes and air-strikes as special abilities and a Strategic Command Card system giving you additional tools to use against the entrenched enemy such as deploying mines or temporarily improving the precision of your units.
One particular feature which is a welcome and rare sight in 2018 is local multiplayer. There’s online multiplayer as well, but hot-seat isn’t something you see often anymore. Developer Mythical City has also already laid out some post-launch support plans beyond the additional campaigns being released - later in the year, a VR version of the game will also be released with full Vive, Rift and Windows Mixed Reality compatibility.
Battle Fleet: Ground Assault will be released on PC via Steam on the 1st of May.
