Petroglyph, the creators of Command & Conquer, while doing a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) about their latest RTS Forged Battalion were asked about their most popular title Star Wars: Empire At War, and said that they approached EA about doing a sequel.

You can see the comment in context here. Petroglyph were asked about a potential expansion to Star Wars: Empire At War, which in 2017 received new patches and Steam Workshop support. Here is the response from Petroglyph developer Ted:
"I don't have details, but EA has the license to do all Star Wars games and they seem focused on making a few titles at a very high quality bar. So, they are using all their available resources to that end, which means that if you're not into FPS, it's not currently a priority... We have reached out to them a few times to see if they would be interested in contracting us to build an Empire at War II at the same quality level as their other Star Wars FPS titles, but nothing has resulted from that (yet)."
EA are obviously concentrating on Star Wars Battlefront 2, despite the issues that game has had. Still, every single Star Wars gaming fan would like more than just a multiplayer shooter every two years, and we hope that Petroglyph's efforts to reach out to EA will be forthcoming.
Remember that EA have a long history with the RTS including Command & Conquer (which the team at Petroglyph helped create) and Lord of the Rings: Battle For Middle-Earth, so they're not beyond doing them.
In the shorter term, Petroglyph are looking to continue their support of Star Wars: Empire At War. Ted added "we are still collecting data and hoping to get another patch out based on feedback."
Other Petroglyph developer Torpid also had this to say:
"We would LOVE to work on Empire at War again - we've been tossing around ideas ever since the new movies came out. However, the decision is entirely up to Disney (the IP holder) and Electronic Arts (the exclusive video game license holder)."
Hopefully EA will change their minds as we'd love to get another Star Wars RTS from Petroglyph. In the meantime, check out their latest title Forged Battalion.
