Starpoint Gemini 3 is out now in Steam Early Access, giving anyone interested in cruising the galaxy as a ne'er-do-well Han Solo-type a chance to try the game out well before its official release date.
But why would you want to try out a game so early? As the Steam page says, "Starpoint Gemini 3 is far from finished", so why pick up the game now if it'll be a long time before it's completed? We can think of multiple reasons to take the plunge now, actually, so let's run down five reasons why you'd want to give Starpoint Gemini 3 in Early Access a try!
1. It's a full space-based RPG
Despite the popularity of games like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect, and how much people are looking forward to The Outer Worlds or Starfield, can you actually think of many sci-fi RPGs where you get to properly explore space - not planets? Starpoint Gemini 3 is such a game. It's a deep character-focused game - with a full skill system, a lot of choice, and a deep story to uncover in the depths of space.
2. Epic space combat
Deep in third or first-person cockpit, you can experience action-packed space combat against ships of varying sizes and power - but only ever in small, tough, little ships. It's more personal that way. There's a range of high-tech weaponry that you can deck your ship out with, including machines, blasters, and cannons - and there's upgradeable skills to match. You can try all of this in the Early Access version - the game's not complete, but the combat's front and centre.
3. Meet the locals and explore the galaxy
Aside from combat, the crux of Starpoint Gemini 3 is giving you the freedom to explore the galaxy. Check out anomalies, space stations, and poke through abandoned hulking derelicts over Gemini and other star systems of the former Empire. Find out the terrible truths behind ex-imperial colonies and what the Empire got up to, and then meet a load of colourful locals in the seedy bars around the galaxy. The Early Access version contains roughly one third of the galaxy, so there's plenty to do - and plenty more to see, as the game builds around you.
4. Earn space bucks... and spend it!
Just like everything ever, at the end of the day you're going to need money. You can get a few jobs from seedy bars, or you can go off in search of trade, ore, or build things yourself with blueprints and sell them on. Once you've got the cash you can either spend it on drink, or by upgrading your ship and your tech with the best money can buy - and you can mix and match however you like.
5. Help shape the game - and get it at its cheapest price
For the developers, the real purpose of putting Starpoint Gemini 3 in Early Access and getting it into the hands of gamers is to get feedback - and that feedback will help shape the very future of the game. As you play the game, you can talk to the developers on the Steam forums or the game's Discord and tell them anything you like or dislike, and it'll help make Starpoint Gemini 3 improve.
Even better, if you pick up the game on Steam Early Access, you're officially getting it for a far lower price than the game will be at launch - the earlier you buy it, the cheaper it'll be. Moreover, if you grab it right now on Steam before September 12, you'll get an additional 10% off and a free copy of Starpoint Gemini 2. That's a pretty great bargain.
Pick up Starpoint Gemini 3 in Early Access and get exploring a huge galaxy that'll build around you - and you'll help to shape that galaxy, too. Sounds like a good deal to us.
