Control is one of the very first times that a major AAA developer has attempted to tackle the niche trope of government bureaucracies fighting violently anomalous phenomena, and it seems that Remedy, the makers of Max Payne and Quantum Break, have a pretty good idea on how to make it work.
The new Control narrative trailer focuses on setting up the atmosphere of the game, and does so with great success, normalising the weirdness of it all along the way.
Control World trailer is almost too calm to properly represent the sort of games Remedy is known for. The Finnish developer specialises in creating narrative experiences such as Alan Wake: they're usually thrillers with fantastical elements and nary a dash of horror added to the mix. Guns, however, are usually part of the equation, and Control will be no different.
What will make Control special, however, is that it is finally going to narrow down what it wants to be, embracing the fledgeling sub-genre of New Weird along the way. The protagonist is going to have to mow down all sorts of horrors, yes, but she will do so while exploring a quaint catastrophe like no other, and this is sort of what the trailer aims to convey.
