Age of Empires 4 sees one of the most venerable real-time strategy game series returning and, while there’s plenty about it that captures the essence of the older games, fans might be wondering about more modern features like crossplay and whether or not cross-platform support might be available at launch.
Age of Empires 4 releases at a time when an increasing number of games feature crossplay, allowing players across different storefronts and consoles to team up or go against each other. Since it’s an RTS that tries to appeal to both older and newer players, let’s see where it stands as far as cross-platform support is concerned.
Age of Empires IV released as a PC exclusive but is available on both Steam and the Microsoft Store, which is where crossplay questions usually stem from. Purchasing the game on one storefront only to find yourself unable to play against or alongside friends who bought it on the other would be quite frustrating.
Thankfully, the game’s Steam page sheds some light on the matter of Age of Empires IV cross-platform support, confirming that it is available at launch. If you head to the options menu, you’ll also notice options for linking your Steam and Xbox Live profile.
The feature was also present in Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition and, if AoE 4 is anything like it, Microsoft Store/Xbox Game Pass players should have an Xbox symbol next to their name in the lobby, while Steam players should have a planet symbol.
With Age of Empires 4 crossplay now covered, check out the playable civilizations available at launch.
