Frost Giant Studios has confirmed that players will be able to try out all of Stormgate’s modes without paying any money.
The real-time strategy game’s unveiling earlier this month was a treat for fans of Blizzard and the genre at large, but the decision to launch it as a free-to-play title raised a number of questions, especially regarding content that would potentially be locked behind a paywall.
While there will certainly be purchasable content, it does sound like we’ll be able to sample all of what the game has to offer without reaching for our wallets.
“It will be possible to experience all of Stormgate’s game modes without spending anything,” Production Director and CEO Tim Morton wrote in a Reddit AMA. “For each game mode, there will be additional content that players have the option, but not a requirement, to purchase. This includes continuing campaign chapters, new heroes for cooperative play, and new cosmetics.”
He also notes that content will be priced “according to the value we believe it provides,” and that the team behind the game “does not support ‘pay-to-win’,” and will not rely on “frustration mechanics or compulsion mechanics.”
Frost Giant Studios also plans to deliver more Stormgate content than a regular DLC model would allow, also exemplified by the episodic model it uses for its single-player campaign.
Stormgate is slated to enter beta at some point in 2023.
