After confirmation on Monday the rumored battle royale mode for Battlefield 6 was launching alongside the first Season 1 update, the gameplay trailer has been revealed, and it’s packed with a few surprises.
Before we get into the trailer, here’s what’s available right now across all platforms and welcoming all FPS players, as the REDSEC (Redacted Sector) experience is a free-to-play sandbox that will evolve alongside the central Battlefield 6 multiplayer component:
- Battle Royale Initiation: A low-stakes learning environment for “new players” in two-player squads. It takes place in a smaller version of the Fort Lyndon BR map and includes bots. 48 players max.
- Class-based REDSEC Battle Royale: Weapons and ammo drops are available all over the map, with contracts rewarding even stronger items. A “circle of death” that reminds vets of Firestorm’s deadly circle of fire gradually consumes the map like in other battle royale games. 100 players max.
- Gauntlet round-based multiplayer: In this extra mode, eight squads must play the objectives and score points advance to the top. Losers don’t get second chances and are eliminated. 32 players max.
As you can see in the gameplay trailer, Battlefield 6’s vehicles and large-scale destruction are at the center of REDSEC, a mode that’s otherwise clearly aiming at taking Call of Duty: Warzone down. Considering the success BF6 has already achieved, we wouldn’t be surprised if this new free-to-play BR also made a dent on CoD’s impact as Black Ops 7 approaches its November launch.
Perhaps the most interesting bit comes at the very end, when it’s revealed that the Portal component of Battlefield 6, which allows players to create custom maps and modes of all sorts, is also part of the dense REDSEC package that’s available for free. Needless to say, that’s the sort of decision which could be genre-shaking as EA and Battlefield Studios vow to develop the game and this BR mode alongside players.
