Warparty developer Warcave today revealed more information about turn-based strategy game Black Legend’s classes and alchemy battle system. The title boasts fifteen classes determined by the equipment worn by your characters. Players obtain different pieces of equipment as they explore the fog-covered city of Grant and defeat members of the Cult of Mephisto.
A character equipped with light armor and a rifle becomes a Sharpshooter. Exchanging light armor for heavy armor while keeping the rifle turns them into an Executioner. Black Legend’s classes don’t limit the skills your character can use. This, in turn, means that players have a higher amount of flexibility when setting up their parties.
Black Legend’s Alchemist class dons heavy armor and excels at supporting allies while using “a mixture of powders, explosions and concoctions” to debilitate opponents. The Buccaneer fights under versatility’s sign, charging into battle with both ranged and melee weapons, as well as a set of curses. Whether this implies some magical knowledge or a foul mouth remains to be seen.
Where Commanders “point out targets, inspire comrades and instill fear in enemies,” Doppelsoldners rely on their greatsword to deal heavy damage. The weapon allows them to strike multiple targets with a wide swing and soften them for their allies.
Dragoon is essentially the same thing as “dragon” but with an extra “o”. These guys have “zero regard for their own safety” and deal in Pyrokinetics. It’s probably safe to expect lots of explosions. Duelists take a different approach to combat, fighting enemies head-on and overcoming them through mastery of the blade.
Merciless, wearing heavy armor and equipped with both axe and gun, the Executioners “deliver death swiftly and efficiently.” Bringing a shield on top of heavy armor, Guards are the most defensively-inclined Black Legend class. That, however, doesn’t mean they can’t deal damage of their own.
While Inquisitors employ both blade and pistol in their hunt for the unnatural, Marauders bring heavy weapons and light armor, relying on a combination of brute strength and speed to eliminate opponents. If those nasty cultists are moving around too much, you’ll want to bring one or more Landsknechts. Their spears and halberds can slow opponents down while making it them the quickest heavy armor class.
“What can cure can also kill” best describes the Plague Doctor, a class that can be a boon for your party and a nightmare for opponents. The agile and cunning rogue exploits the weaknesses of opponents’ and can swiftly retreat when needed. Rounding off the Black Legend class list is the Sharpshooter, who snipes opponents from afar.
The title’s combat system, however, involves much more than mixing and matching these classes. Alchemy, too, plays a role and can grant your troops useful status effects. Different combinations of the four stages of the magnum opus – nigredo, albedo, ctrinitas and rubedo – result in different effects, as detailed by the developer below:
- Bronze: A combination of rubedo and ctrinitas, representing Disease
- Red: Rubedo, representing External Bleeding
- Crimson: A combination of rubedo and nigredo, representing Internal Bleeding
- Black: Nigredo, representing black bile caused by Heavy Impact
- Silver: A combination of Albedo and Nigredo, representing Poison
- White: Albedo, representing phlegm caused by metal poisoning from Sharp Weapons
- Gold: A combination of Albedo and Ctrinitas, representing Weakness of the Mind and Soul
- Yellow: Ctrinitas, representing yellow bile caused by Explosives
Black Legend launches in Q1 2021 and is headed to PC, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, and Nintendo Switch. A demo is available on Steam.
